Four Regulative Principles

Some people may need more details regarding the four regulative principles namely (no meat-eating, no illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling).  There are apparently some ISKCON approved pages and websites with clarifications regarding the four regulative principles.  Here is one site to try.

Otherwise, it is probably easier to find information about vegetarianism than the other three of these four regulative principles.  Check the following web pages for resources regarding vegetarianism.

Vegetarian Food Relief:

There should be no starvation or malnutrition for any human being!  We need to reach into every neighborhood of the world with God’s help.  We are doing it for God.  God has given us so much advice.  God would prefer heaven on earth working through and with all humanity.

Why Be Vegetarian:  By Stephen Knapp

The following passages found in the 11th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam gives some hints on how to cope with accepting the necessary austerities in Bhakti Yoga.

SB 11.28.38 — The physical body of the endeavoring yogī who is not yet mature in his practice may sometimes be overcome by various disturbances. Therefore the following process is recommended.
SB 11.28.39 — Some of these obstructions may be counteracted by yogic meditation or by sitting postures, practiced together with concentration on controlled breathing, and others may be counteracted by special austerities, mantras or medicinal herbs.
SB 11.28.40 — These inauspicious disturbances can be gradually removed by constant remembrance of Me, by congregational hearing and chanting of My holy names, or by following in the footsteps of the great masters of yoga.
Four Regulative Principles

*No meat eating (No meat, fish, or eggs  Garlic and Onions are also considered somewhat tamasic and devotees normally avoid these items as food.)

*No illicit sex (At least sex only in marriage with the greatest ideal sex only for religious and spiritual conception of children)

*No intoxication (No illegal intoxication, no legal intoxication, and even no caffeine;  I have never seen injunctions in ISKCON teachings against ginseng.  However, some devotees may feel ginseng could also serve as some kind of aphrodisiac and so should also be avoided if ginseng creates problems for our spiritual life. )

*No gambling (There are different types of gambling.  Gambling as in a casino, too many business gambles, and too much philosophical speculation – should all be avoided.)
